Sparkling Snow

February 25, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

3 Eggs AM-Yesterday we had lots of flurries but nothing added up to much, had a wonderful day at my friend Katie’s looking at her art and eating fresh fruits and bread, and muffins, while listening to her ipod mix. Left around 3pm and the weather was still flurries and wet roads. This morning I awoke to another winter wonderland of sparkling snow sticking to every branch and twig. Beautiful. Flock seems happy but want OUT!  I want out too. Rumor of yet another storm pending this week.

slushy

February 24, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

4 eggs AM-Another storm this weekend, but thankfully missed us by a hair. A wet slushy mess we are left with but I hear it’s supposed to start snowing again later today. Broccoli , butternut squash on the menu. Flock is happy but wants out. Sure wish things would start melting soon!

Storm Prep

February 22, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

4 Eggs AM-Another weekend storm bears down on us, and I hope to put up some sort of barrier to keep the snow out of the coop. At very least a foot predicted. ick. Icy conditions around the coop still. I laid some hay down on top of it for traction. Bread as a treat, going to the store later and will find some things. Flock looks happy and frisky.

Ice Skating at the Coop

February 20, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

4 eggs AM-The morning sun and bright sky fooled me as I went out to feed and water the flock. The rain from yesterday has left a coating of ice on everything and I almost fell 3 times. The treats were minimal this morning just corn. I was hoping to let them free range today, but it colder than I anticipated and also the icy conditions might make it hard to catch them.

Quiet Tuesday

February 19, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

3 Eggs AM-The weather has warmed ever so slightly, and it’s not quite as bitter. Flock seems very happy, the coop run is drying out and I look forward to some melting snow so I can let them out and free range again. I dropped one of the eggs, cracked but not broken, oops. Cornbread, hotdog rolls, a piece of broccoli and some butternut squash on the menu.

After The Wind

February 18, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

4 Eggs AM-Like last storm today is a fabulous day! Cobalt blue skies and warm sunshine. The wind doesn’t want to quit, but mother nature is as sick of winter as we are. Flock seems happy, treats of old hotdog rolls, cornbread and a slice of butternut squash. I read the seeds are a good natural wormer. I sure hope the snow melts soon so we can start looking for the snow drops and the early bloomers. bns

Sunday Snow

February 17, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

3 Eggs AM-Yet more snow on Sunday morning, bitter and windy. Flock was chatty enjoying stale bread, couple pieces of broccoli for the suet feeder so they can nibble, and corn. I think some sort of shutter system around the back side of the coop run to keep the snow from getting in would work. Maybe I can find some free stuff this spring as people remodel.

Friday 2-15

February 15, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

0 Eggs am-Valentine’s Day has come and gone, the weather feels good with another weekend storm possible this weekend. Flock is happy, but I haven’t had time to buy new treats, so they are just getting their layer feed. The coop and run need a major cleaning, it’s holding up well, and kinda of glad we had this horrible weather to see where to make changes in it this year.

Rohan loves walking on the snow, he really thinks he’s special.

Heading over to my friend’s for coffee and maybe a walk. It’s still quite icy out.

Rainy, slushy day

February 11, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

3 eggs AM-This morning everything is melting creating a great slush and from what I understand it’s going to get cold again later tonight. Warmed corn and spring mix on the menu. The flock loved the new hay I put into the nesting boxes and gave me 3 eggs this morning. Coop run is wet, but not sure if that is from melting snows or water getting in. 1/2 the coop still full of snow. All in all the flock looks healthy and happy, and thus far have survived one of the worst winters on record.

I will always miss Betsy, my only loss this winter, but she died before it was even cold, and I think she had other issues, because the week before I took photos and she was happy and healthy. I think maybe something got stuck in her crop or she was egg bound. Hard to say.

Blue Sky Sunny Day!

February 10, 2013 - Author: Fallen sky

Truly amazing mother nature knows just how to clean up her own messes. Today it’ll be in the mid-30’s and some of this snow will start to melt. I finally coaxed the flock out of the coop after scraping up as much snow as I could in the run. Nice “spring mix” treat lured them to come down. Sammi was still on the fence about the whole idea and May and Flower decided to lay eggs instead. (Never a bad thing) At least they can get to the water, which was my biggest concern yesterday.

Flock pecking at the spring mix in the suet feeder. I got the large hook at a yard sale for 0.50 cents.

Sammi hiding inside the coop she’s not so sure, and hates the snow

1pm- 5 eggs Walked up to my friend’s house for some much needed hay for the nesting boxes. They were all down in the run, having a blast being out and about. Weather has been so pretty today. Nestings boxes all refreshed.
